Muskegon County – More than 200 people were charged with fraud Monday morning in connection with a scheme that took at least $400,000 from the federal government, the county prosecutor said.
The Muskegon Police Department along with the Prosecutor’s office and the Office of the Inspector General for the SSA conducted “Operation Rain Check” which resulted to the arrest of 56 people with felony charges and 153 with misdemeanor charges.
Some 166 offenders admitted to the scheme as the investigation went on and uncovered the system of filing false claims of undelivered or stolen disability checks which they will later cash in. One of them admitted to defrauding the federal government of at least $23,000.
