List of Available Disability Insurance Benefits in Times of Need

Disability is something that we all did not want to happen to us. However, something can get out of hand that may render us disabled – either temporarily or permanently.

Studies show that a 20-year-old worker has a 3 in 10 chance of becoming disabled before reaching retirement age. For work or off-work related injuries, this list of available disability insurance benefits may come in handy.

Employer disability insurance

Most private employers offer medical, dental and life insurance benefits to their employees. Some offers disability benefits, which can cover short-term disability, long-term disability, or both.

A copy of employee’s manual or contract of employment may contain provisions on qualification and entitlement to disability insurance. Human resources officer may further provide information on company’s disability insurance policies.

State Disability Insurance

For those not covered by employer’s disability insurance, the state government may have a program that can cover them. The states of California, New York, New Jersey, Hawaii and Rhode Islands, among others, have their own state disability insurance programs.

Usually, funds for disability insurance benefits came from contributions given by employees. Those who suffer non-work related disability may also file money claim to replace their lost income from such fund.

Some state’s program also covers cases of women who cannot report to work because of pregnancy or those who takes time off to take care of ill relatives or a newborn child.

Workmen’s Compensation

Those who did not qualify to State’s Disability Insurance may claim under the Workmen’s Compensation Disability Insurance. Almost all states in the country require private and public employers to establish this type of disability insurance.

Employees, who were injured on the job or developed a job related disease but did not otherwise qualify under the State’s Disability Insurance, may file under Workmen’s Compensation.

Social Security disability benefits

The Social Security Administration pays disability benefits under the following programs:

The Social Security disability insurance program - This program pays benefit to a worker and certain family members if he has worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes. If the worker’s child suffers disability which started before the age of 22, such child may also qualify for benefits under the worker’s earning records.

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program - This program pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources.

SSA may be reached thru toll-free number-1-800-772-1213 or at www.ssa.gov or consult with a Social Security Law attorney to know more on how to avail SSA disability benefits.

SSA imposes strict qualifications and proof of severe medical conditions to be eligible to SSA disability benefits.

Veterans’ disability insurance

For service members and veterans, The US Veterans Benefits Administration gives disability insurance to service members and veterans under two programs:

  1. Disability compensation – Given to service members and veterans who suffer at least 10% disability as a result of military service. The disability contemplated here includes physical injuries, physical and mental diseases, and posttraumatic stress disorder.

  2. Disability pension – Disability insurance benefits are given to eligible wartime veterans who have limited income and cannot work, or who are 65 years old or older.
