Social Security Administration Death Records

Death records have been a great help to many genealogy and family history researchers, providing valuable information and clues to an ancestor's or relative's death. Over the last few years, many people and organizations have been publishing death record archives on the Internet. Some with thousands of records, others with millions.

While we cannot provide links to every possible death record resource, we have provided you with the best and most reliable resources.

Moreover, we provided links to mainly to those death record archives and databases that provide older death records from the 1950's and earlier, which should be of more value to genealogists and family historians.

The SSA Death Master File is used by leading government, financial, investigative, credit reporting organization, medical research and other industries to verify identity as well as to prevent fraud and comply with the USA Patriot Act. To assist in this effort, NTIS and SSA are working together to offer the SSA Death Master File more frequently, with fewer delays, and in different formats.

Now this essential data can be searched online, negating the need for small to medium sized organizations to maintain and update a large data file.

Before making a request for a death record that occurred between 1867 through December 19, 1908, please confirm that we hold records for the county and time period by reviewing County Death Records at Historical Society. Death record requests that are submitted with a county, name of deceased, and exact year of death are processed by our staff as COPY REQUESTS. The county where the death was registered and the name of the deceased must be provided, but our staff will search a 10 year time frame if the exact year of death is unknown. Death record requests that are submitted with a county, name of deceased, and a time frame within the 10 year span are processed by our staff as RESEARCH REQUESTS. A complete description of all request policies can be reviewed at Guidelines for Offsite Copy and Research Requests.
