Social Security Administration Disability Benefits

Studies show that one out of four workers will become disabled during his lifetime. The Social Security program is run by the United States government and is the program that provides benefits to disabled workers who are unable to work for a year or more because of their disability. Benefits continue until a person is able to work again on a regular basis, and a number of work incentives are available to ease the transition back to work.

The Social Security Administration Disability Benefits are generally paid under two programs, namely, the Social Security Disability Insurance and the Supplemental Security Income. The Social Security Disability Insurance benefit is paid to workers who have worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes while the Supplemental Security Income is paid based on financial need. SSI pays monthly checks to individuals who are sixty-five or older, blind or have a disability and who don’t own much or have a lot of income. SSI is not only for adults as monthly checks can also go to disabled and blind children. Individuals who get SSI usually get food stamps and Medicaid, too.

When you apply for Social Security Administration Disability Benefits, the Social Security Administration will collect medical information and other documents and make a decision whether or not you meet the definition of disability according to Social Security. You can, generally, receive Social Security Administration Disability Benefits at any age. If you are receiving disability benefits at sixty-five, they become retirement benefits although the amount remains the same. Additionally, certain member of your family may also qualify for benefits on your record.

You need to understand though that the law allows only a short period of time for Social Security disability claims. For this reason, it is essential that you contact a Social Security lawyer to help you with all the paper works and determine how much time you have left. If you do not have your claim filed within the time provided by law, your claim may be thrown out and your benefits may be denied. Hence, may it a point to speak with a lawyer without delay.
